The rules everywhere: vehicle under 1.5 tons, maximum three loads a day, clean rubble only. Three gates refuse rubble outright, and they are the ones that catch people.

The quick answer, by area

Cape Town’s dump-site network is dense enough that the right gate is rarely more than 15 minutes away. The workhorses, corner by corner:

• Northern suburbs: Bellville South drop-off (the old “Bellville South landfill” — now a transfer station) or Vissershok Landfill off the N7 for bigger loads.
• Southern suburbs and False Bay: Prince George Drive drop-off in Grassy Park — Sundays to 17:00, the latest in the network — or Coastal Park Landfill on Baden Powell Drive.
• City Bowl and inner city: Woodstock drop-off at 25 Beach Road — summer weekdays to 19:30.
• Cape Flats: Mitchells Plain drop-off on Spine Road — but not Swartklip, which refuses rubble.

The rules before you load the trailer

Every facility applies the same resident rules, published on the City’s facility pages: cars, trailers and LDVs with a carrying capacity not exceeding 1.5 tons; a maximum of three loads of builder’s rubble, garage waste and garden waste per day; no limit on recycling loads; access dependent on available resources on the day.

“Clean” is the word that turns loads away. The accepted item is clean builder’s rubble — brick, concrete, tile, plaster and sand. Rubble mixed through with bags of general waste, timber offcuts and packaging does not fit any accepted category, so sort the pile before you drive, not at the gate.

The three gates that refuse rubble

The Sea Point drop-off is a recycling-and-small-items facility: no rubble, no garden waste, no garage waste. Swartklip caps its daily loads at garden waste only. And the Kraaifontein waste management facility refuses rubble outright even though it is the northern suburbs’ biggest drop-off — Kraaifontein renovators go to Bellville South or Vissershok instead.

Overweight and commercial loads

Past 1.5 tons, or arriving as a business, you are weighbridge traffic at the landfills rather than a free drop-off visitor — and the landfill gate keeps shorter hours than the drop-off gate on the same premises: Vissershok’s landfill shuts at 15:45 on weekdays and Coastal Park’s at 16:00, weekdays only. When self-hauling stops being worth it
