The Kraaifontein Integrated Waste Management Facility is at the corner of Maroela and Sandringham roads, Kraaifontein. It is a drop-off, a materials recovery facility, a refuse transfer station and a green-waste chipping area on one site — and builders’ rubble is refused.
Four operations on one site
Where distances to landfill for internal and external refuse collection service providers are too far to travel, they may make use of a transfer station to offload waste. The waste is then compacted into containers and transferred via rail or road to a landfill site.
The Kraaifontein Integrated Waste Management Facility has a drop-off facility, materials recovery facility (MRF), a refuse transfer station (RTS) and a green waste chipping area.
The recycled waste is pre-sorted by the householder prior to collection. At the “clean” MRF the dry, clean recyclables are separated, baled and sold by a contractor. All general waste is accepted at the public drop-off. The waste is also compacted into closed containers and transported in bulk to Vissershok prior to landfilling.
