What Can You Put in a Skip Bin? Complete Guide β Skip Hire ZA Cape Town
Accepted & prohibited waste β what goes in, what doesn’t, and what to do with banned items.
π 076 124 1578 β Ask About Your WasteKnowing what can go in a skip before you hire one saves you time, money, and potential legal liability. Prohibited items placed in skips create disposal problems, attract additional charges, and in some cases violate South African waste management law under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA, Act 59 of 2008). Skip Hire ZA follows all NEMWA-compliant disposal requirements β here’s exactly what’s accepted, what’s not, and what to do with materials we can’t take.

β What You CANNOT Put in a Skip Bin
The following are strictly prohibited in all skip bins under South African law and Skip Hire ZA policy:
π« Asbestos
Any asbestos-containing material (ACM) β corrugated sheets, insulation, textured coatings. Requires licensed specialist removal. Call a certified asbestos contractor.
π« Tyres
Vehicle tyres are regulated under the ROSE Foundation scheme. Many tyre dealers accept old tyres for recycling β contact your nearest tyre retailer.
π« Paint & Solvents
Liquid paint, thinners, varnish, turpentine. Allow paint to dry fully β dried paint tins in small quantities are accepted. Liquid paint is hazardous waste.
π« Batteries
Lead-acid car batteries and lithium batteries are hazardous. Many battery retailers (Battery Centre, Autozone) and recycling depots accept them.
π« Gas Cylinders
Pressurised containers β LPG cylinders, aerosols. Return to the supplier or a gas retailer for safe handling.
π« Medical Waste
Clinical waste, sharps, medication. Medical waste requires specialist collection β contact a licensed medical waste contractor.
π« Chemicals & Oils
Engine oil, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals. Many service stations accept used oil. Contact a licensed hazardous waste collector for others.
π« Electrical Waste (e-Waste)
TVs, computers, monitors, phones with circuit boards. E-Waste recyclers operate in Cape Town β search for EWASA-registered collectors in your area.
What Happens If Prohibited Items Are Found in Your Skip?
If prohibited materials are found in a skip after delivery, we are legally required to remove them before disposal. This results in:
- A prohibited waste surcharge (typically R300βR1,000 depending on material and quantity)
- Additional collection and specialist disposal costs passed to the hirer
- In cases of seriously hazardous material, reporting obligations under NEMWA
The best approach: if you’re unsure whether a material is accepted, call us before putting it in the skip β we’ll advise immediately at no cost.
Skip Hire ZA’s Waste Disposal Commitment
