Most people fill a skip the same way they pack a car boot — roughly, with whatever’s nearest. That’s how you end up with a full-looking skip that’s only half its potential capacity, or an overweight skip that can’t be legally collected. This guide covers the right way to pack any skip size for maximum efficiency.
Rule 1: Heavy Materials Go in First
Start with your heaviest, densest materials: rubble, broken tiles, bricks, soil, concrete. Place these flat on the base of the skip. Benefits:
- Creates a stable, even base for lighter materials on top
- Prevents the skip from becoming top-heavy
- Allows you to visually see when you’re reaching the weight limit before filling the volume
Rule 2: Break Down Everything You Can
- Furniture: Dismantle tables, wardrobes, and bed frames. Flat-packed wood takes a fraction of the space of assembled furniture
- Branches: Cut or break down to under 1–1.5m lengths — long branches waste enormous space and create awkward packing
- Cardboard: Always flatten cardboard boxes — a single unflattened moving box wastes as much volume as 10 flattened ones
- Bags: Remove waste from black bin bags and tip directly into the skip — bag walls waste space and prevent waste from compacting naturally
Rule 3: Fill Gaps with Small Items
After placing large, heavy items, fill the gaps between them with smaller items: rubble fragments, soil, sand, gravel, smaller off-cuts. Think of it like packing a suitcase — smaller items pack around larger ones. This can increase your effective skip capacity by 20–30%.
Rule 4: Never Exceed the Fill Line
All skip bins have a maximum fill level — the top rim of the skip. Do not fill above this level. Overfilled skips:
- Cannot be legally transported on Cape Town roads
- Risk material falling off during transit (liability falls on the hirer)
- Will be left by our driver until excess waste is removed
If you’re running out of space before you’ve finished loading, call us — adding a second skip or upgrading to a larger size is often the most practical solution.
Rule 5: Keep Prohibited Items Out
Double-check before loading. The three most commonly mistakenly placed items are tyres (often spotted in garages), paint tins with liquid paint, and old batteries. A prohibited item fee of R300–R1,000 will be charged if these are found at collection. Check the full prohibited items list here.
Heavy Load Warning: Rubble and Concrete
For rubble-heavy loads, fill to no more than 50–60% volume if loading pure concrete or heavy tiles. Mix in lighter materials (timber, plasterboard, packaging) throughout the load to distribute weight. A mini skip loaded entirely with concrete can weigh 4–5 tonnes — more than 3× its safe transport limit.
